PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious and often life-altering mental health condition that develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Whether the trauma stems from abuse, violence, an accident, natural disaster, or a deeply distressing personal loss, PTSD can make it feel like the past is always just beneath the surface—ready to rise up and overwhelm you without warning. It’s not just a memory; it’s a psychological wound that can impact your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and physical health if left unaddressed.

People living with PTSD often experience vivid flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts that pull them back into the trauma as if it’s happening all over again. Everyday situations—certain sounds, smells, or places—can become unbearable triggers. In an effort to cope, many begin to avoid people, places, or conversations that remind them of the trauma, which can lead to isolation, anxiety, and a growing sense of disconnection from the world. It’s also common to feel emotionally numb, hopeless, or angry without understanding why, creating conflict in relationships or challenges in work and personal life. You may constantly feel on edge, startled easily, or unable to relax, as if you're stuck in a state of high alert.

PTSD affects about 3.5% of U.S. adults each year, with women being more likely to develop the condition than men. It can occur at any age and in response to any kind of trauma—what matters is not the event itself, but how your mind and body experienced it. Unfortunately, many individuals delay seeking help, hoping time will heal what trauma has disrupted. But untreated PTSD doesn’t just fade—it can intensify, leading to depression, substance use, sleep disorders, chronic health problems, and in some cases, suicidal thoughts.

At Inner You Clinical Services®, we are here to help you interrupt that cycle and begin your path toward healing. We offer a range of evidence-based treatment options designed to address the emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms of PTSD. Our therapists use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you reframe unhelpful thinking patterns and reduce trauma-related distress. We also integrate mindfulness and relaxation techniques to help soothe your nervous system and reestablish a sense of safety in your body and environment. When needed, we provide referrals for specialized treatments such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a widely respected therapy specifically designed for trauma recovery.
